Listening is often the hardest skill in French, because of speed, liaisons and words that "disappear" in speech (je ne sais pas → chais pas).

  1. Choose a recording at your level: you should understand the gist.
  2. Listen once without a transcript, for general meaning.
  3. Listen again with the transcript or French subtitles.
  4. Listen once more without help.
  5. Repeat sentences out loud (shadowing: speaking along with the recording).
  • news in easy French;
  • podcasts for learners, then podcasts for native speakers;
  • series with French subtitles (not subtitles in your language);
  • songs with the lyrics.
