Learning French is within everyone's reach, as long as you choose a method that fits your goals and practise regularly. This guide covers the steps, methods, resources and certificates.

Why learn French?

[modifier | modifier le wikicode]

French is spoken on all five continents. According to the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (2026 report), around 396 million people speak it, and it is the second most widely learned foreign language in the world. It is an official language of the United Nations, the European Union, the African Union and the International Olympic Committee. See

1. Define your goal

[modifier | modifier le wikicode]

Travel, study, work, immigration, an exam, culture, family: your goal determines what to learn first and which level to aim for.

2. Understand the levels

[modifier | modifier le wikicode]

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) defines six levels, from A1 (beginner) to C2 (mastery). They are the reference point for courses, textbooks and exams.

3. Plan the time you need

[modifier | modifier le wikicode]

For English speakers, the US Foreign Service Institute estimates that about 24 to 30 weeks of intensive training are needed to reach professional working proficiency. In practice, it depends on your native language, your pace and your method.

➜ Main article: How long does it take?

4. Choose how to learn

[modifier | modifier le wikicode]
Way of learning Strengths Limitations
On your own free or cheap, flexible requires a lot of discipline; little speaking practice
With a teacher correction, structured progress cost
At a school structure, group, certificates schedules, cost
Through immersion fast progress in speaking cost, organisation
Online regularity, fun, available anywhere speaking practice often insufficient on its own

Most successful learners combine several ways of learning.

5. Work on every skill

[modifier | modifier le wikicode]

Listening, reading, speaking, writing and interacting. See Language skills.

6. Build the foundations

[modifier | modifier le wikicode]

7. Practise every day

[modifier | modifier le wikicode]

Consistency is the single most important factor. 20 to 30 minutes a day beats 3 hours on Sunday. See Staying motivated.

8. Certify your level

[modifier | modifier le wikicode]

The DELF and DALF diplomas, and the TCF and TEF tests, certify your level for study, work or immigration. See Choosing an exam.
