The TCF and TEF are level tests: unlike the DELF and DALF, you can't pass or fail them; they give you a CEFR level at a given point in time.
| Test | Provider | Common uses |
|---|---|---|
| TCF (Test de connaissance du français) | France Éducation international | university admission in France (TCF DAP), citizenship and residence permits (TCF IRN), immigration to Quebec and Canada (TCF Québec, TCF Canada) |
| TEF (Test d'évaluation de français) | CCI Paris Île-de-France | immigration to Canada and Quebec (TEF Canada, TEFAQ), citizenship (TEF IRN), study |
Validity
Results are generally valid for two years, unlike the DELF and DALF, which are valid for life.
Format
Compulsory papers (listening, reading, often language structures) plus speaking and writing papers depending on the version. Tests are available on paper and on computer.
⚠️ Administrative rules change: always check up-to-date official information (service-public.fr, France Éducation international, the Canadian and Quebec immigration authorities, the test providers) before registering.
