French is one of Canada's two official languages and the only official language of Quebec.

Immigration

  • For federal immigration, French proficiency (shown with the TEF Canada or TCF Canada) can earn extra points, and Canada encourages francophone immigration outside Quebec.
  • Quebec, which selects its own economic immigrants, places great importance on French (TEFAQ, TCF Québec, TEF Canada, TCF Canada).

Quebec French

Quebec French has its own pronunciation and vocabulary (magasiner – to go shopping, courriel – email, char – car, blonde – girlfriend). It's worth getting used to it by listening to Quebec media.

Learning in Canada

The federal and provincial governments fund free language classes for newcomers; in Quebec, they are offered by the ministry responsible for immigration and francisation.

⚠️ Administrative rules change: always check up-to-date official information (service-public.fr, France Éducation international, the Canadian and Quebec immigration authorities, the test providers) before registering.
